Incredible Years Teacher Programme

Incredible Years is a world recognised and evidenced-based programme for teachers - supported by over 30 years of research.

For Life Education and Training is contracted by the Ministry of Education to deliver this course in the Hawke’s Bay and Waikato regions to registered teachers.

The programme provides teachers with approaches to help turn disruptive behaviour around and create a more positive learning environment for their students.  It assists teachers in supporting the development of children’s social, emotional and academic competence. The programme is for teachers of children aged 3–8 years.

The Incredible Years Programme involves 6 full day sessions held over a period of six months plus 1 follow-up day session three months later.

What the programme covers:

  • building positive relationships with students
  • proactively preventing behaviour problems
  • using attention, encouragement and praise to turn behaviour around
  • motivating students by giving them incentives
  • helping students learn social skills, empathy, and problem-solving
  • using appropriate consequences for undesirable behaviour.

To be eligible to attend this course, teachers need to have a teaching diploma (for teachers in Te Kohanga Reo to have attained Whakapakari) and need to be teaching in an early childhood setting.

Funding for teacher release will be provided by the Ministry of Education.

Incredible Years Autism

Incredible Years Autism is a course designed for teachers working with children aged 2 – 5 on the autism spectrum.

For Life Education and Training is contracted by the Ministry of Education to deliver this in the Hawke’s Bay region to Early Childhood Teachers.

A major focus of the Incredible Years Autism programme is encouraging teachers to get in the child’s attention spotlight during child-initiated and child-centred play and not allow the child to avoid engaging with the adult. 

The programme is designed to promote children’s emotional regulation, social competence, language skills, school readiness and relationships with peers and covers:

  • Language development
  • Social interactions and school readiness
  • Emotional literacy and self-regulation.

This course is run over an 8-week period and offers support to teachers to implement strategies for these children to improve their outcomes.

The prerequisite of this course it to have completed the Incredible Years Teacher course and to be a registered teacher or hold a Whakapakari.
